When life gives you lemons, clean. Using lemons to clean gives you a chemical-free home cleaner alternative.
Lemons are a powerful cleaning agent, and the acidic quality in lemon makes its antibacterial, antiseptic, and a genuine bleach. Their citrus smell is refreshing.
ITEMS NEEDED: Every grocery store should have the following, and some of these items you may already have in your home.
- Lemons (well, that is obvious). Save some money and buy the bulk bag.
- Baking Soda. Inexpensive and has many uses. The cooking aisle should have plenty.
- Distilled White Vinegar. This stuff can be used for so much. It can be found in the baking aisle.
- Spray Bottle. The beauty aisle usually has the one for 99 cents.
- Salt. Probably already on a shelf in your home.
- Clean cloth, towel, sponge, etc. Something to wipe with.
- A Clean Jar. A mason jar will do. This for the construction of the spray cleaner.
- Coffee Filter or Paper Towel. This is for the construction of the spray cleaner. Turn it into an air freshener.
Using Lemons to Clean – Best Ways to Clean With Lemons
Start with making your home smell fresh. Cut a few lemons in half and place them in a pot of water. Simmer (medium-low) on the stove, and if you can smell the fresh lemon in the air, then it’s working.
Pro tip: Simmer Lemons on the Stove and Make Them into a Spray Cleaner.
Use the lemon peels to infuse a household cleaner. Place peels in the jar until halfway full, then, pour the vinegar over the lemon peels to the top of the jar. Close the jar and let it sit in a dark place for two weeks.
When the time is complete, open the jar, and use the coffee filter (or paper towel), then, pour the contents of the jar slowly into the filter over the spray bottle’s opening. Close the bottle and shake, and you now have an everyday household cleaner. Spray it on anything you’d normally spray a cleaner on.
For a microwave, take a few wedges of the lemon and put in a measuring cup or glass bowl, then, microwave on high until the water starts to boil. The steam will cover the walls of the microwave, so you have to wipe clean after it steams for about two minutes. Be careful because the glass will be hot.
For the garbage disposal, take some lemons peels, a handful of ice, and three tablespoons of salt, then toss all in the garbage disposal. After that, turn the disposal on. The blades will do their work and the disposals odor will be replaced by an invigorating citrus scent.
For the shower, cut a lemon in half, and pour salt over the exposed part of the lemon. Scrub down the shower with this while using a washcloth or sponge to clean it, then rinse when you are done. This should get rid of soap scum. If you have glass doors on your shower, this should work for them as well.
Another tip on using lemons to clean is to add a few drops of lemon juice to the vacuum’s bag. Your floors will receive that fresh scent.
Rub a lemon wedge onto your countertop and let the juice sit for a few minutes, then wipe clean. You can also use the constructed household cleaner for this as well, and add salt if desired.
For a stovetop, squeeze lemon juice onto your stovetop (more in the baked-on areas). Add a few drops of vinegar to the juice, spread baking soda over these areas, then let it sit a few minutes before you wipe down.
In a bowl, mix two cups of water, and one squirt of lemon juice, then use a cloth to wipe this solution on your windows for a streak-free shine.
Drop a Wedge of Lemon in a Glass of Water
This isn’t a cleaning solution, but you have worked hard. Cut a nice, clean wedge from a lemon, squeeze it into a glass of ice water, and enjoy. You deserve it.
